Immersing herself or her sitters in the landscape, Rolland seeks to experiment with the quasi mystical through Nature and the elements.

Often working in series, she revisits places over a period of time quietly observing the transience of the human condition through the cycle of the seasons. The contrasting notions of the ephemeral and constancy are central to her practice reminding us that much of what we understand as Nature or the natural is increasingly under threat.

 

Her urge to bear witness to specific places leads her to create archives of them with photographs, videos, samples and sound recordings. With those specimens removed from their original locations, Rolland explores the notion of the quasi-scientific juxtaposing this with the impossibility of description. Through this quest she reflects on the exactitude of place and our relationship to identity within notions of the contemporary Sublime.
